Glutaraldehyde is a pale or yellowish transparent and bright liquid with slight irritating odor. It can be dissolved in organic dissolvent such as hot water, ethanol, chloroform, glacial acetic acid, ether and other organic solvents.
In water solution, glutaraldehydes doesn't exist much in free state. Instead, glutaraldehyde makes appearance as hydrates with different forms and most of them are hydrates with annular structure.
Glutaraldehyd is reactive in property, and liable to polymerize and oxidize, which will react with compounds containing active oxygen and nitrogen. The reaction of the product with protein is mainly carried out between the carbonyl group of the former and the amino group of the latter. Among the known aldehydes, glutaraldehydes is one of the best cross-linking agents for proteins.
Glutaraldehyde has a small influence on the activity of enzyme, and most of enzymes can be fixed under controlled condition, to cross-link without losing their activity. Contrbuting to its outstanding characteristics, glutaraldehyd has drawn special concern from people and been put at broad applications.

2% glutaraldehyde (alkaline, acidic, neutral) can be used to sterilize and sterilize all kinds of medical devices.Under normal temperature, the clean and dry equipment is completely immersed in the glutaraldehyde water solution, 30 minutes can reach the effect of sterilizing more than 10 hours.
No matter what kind of preparation, it is necessary to add 0.5% sodium nitrite to be used as a preservative before use. However, once the preservative is added, it can only be kept for 1 month, and the alkaline glutaraldehydes can only be used for 1-2 weeks.
Glutaraldehyde is the first choice for endoscopic disinfection. Many parts of endoscope are not resistant to high temperature and corrosion. And the standard of sterilization is getting higher. Therefore, most endoscopes are sterilized with glutaraldehyde.
The correct procedure for the disinfection and sterilization of glutaraldehydes is:
Taking pollution-free treatment (endoscope can be cleaned directly). That can be used to clean the endoscope with 0.2% effective chlorine cleaning endoscope. Rinse off chlorine with clean water. Wash endoscope with a neutral or enzymatic cleaner. After washing, the equipment needs to be dried. Sterilization, fully immerse the drying apparatus into 2% glutaraldehyde solution and reach the specified time. Remove the residual glutaraldehyde from the sterile distilled water and then use or dry it.
Glutaraldehyde can convert monomer, linear polymer or prepolymer into three-dimensional network structure under certain conditions. At the 1% glutaraldehyde, the crosslinking degree has reached a high level. Under this concentration, the level of crosslinking decreases. At that time, the swellbility and degradation rate increase. When the concentration was more than 1%, the indexes did not change obviously.
